Graham Franklin-Inspiring Career Growth

Can you share a bit about your career journey with GWS? How did it all start?

My journey with GWS started back in 2016 when I joined as an installation technician at a pre-assembly site in Hull, UK. For the next four years, I worked on both onshore and offshore installations, taking on one of the more challenging projects in the UK, the offshore work, navigating the complexities of social distancing and weather-related downtime, which was a significant growth period for me.

Eventually, I received a call from Sam Doleman, the HSEQ director at the time, who had noticed my work and offered me a role as an HSE field officer. That role was a turning point—it challenged me to grow beyond my technical background and step into a leadership position. Two years later, I transitioned into the back office, managing field officers and taking on responsibilities like ISO audits and management systems. It’s been an incredible journey of personal and professional growth.

What are some of your most memorable experiences at GWS?

There have been so many, but a few stand out. As a technician, working on the Rentel project in Belgium was unforgettable. I was part of an incredible team, and every day we installed tower sections while keeping the energy light with plenty of laughter. On the other hand, Greater Changhua in Taiwan was one of the most challenging projects I’ve worked on. It involved navigating cultural differences and unpredictable climates, but it was also deeply rewarding.

Can you tell us about your transition from the field to the back office?

It was a bit of a whirlwind! I was offered the role of managing field officers, but I couldn’t take it on fully while still working on a project. Once I left Taiwan for good, it was an overnight switch. One day, I was in the field; the next, I was the line manager for the field officers. The transition came with its challenges, but it’s been incredibly rewarding to support the team and contribute to the company’s growth from a new angle.

Have you developed any new skills since taking on your back-office role?

Absolutely. One of the most valuable skills I’ve learned is to approach situations more logically. I’ve trained as an ISO lead auditor, which has been invaluable in ensuring our internal procedures align with industry standards. It’s a continuous learning journey, and GWS has invested a lot in my development.

What do you enjoy most about working at GWS?

Honestly, it is the people and freedom. GWS is a place where you feel trusted to make decisions and take ownership of your role. The flexibility on both sides is something I really value. I also must mention my line manager, our HSEQ Director, Jan. He has been an incredible mentor and leader, and I owe a lot to him for his guidance and support.

What motivates you in your current role?

The technicians. Having been one myself, I know what it is like to be out there in the field.

Whenever there is a procedural change or I am writing something like method statements and risk assessments, I always think from their perspective. Making their work safer and more efficient is what drives me every day.

What advice would you give to employees considering a career change within GWS?

Regret something you did, rather than something you didn’t. Taking the leap into a new role can be daunting, but there’s an incredible support system at GWS that will help you navigate the learning curve. Don’t be afraid to take on a new challenge—you’ll grow more than you ever expected.

What do you think makes GWS a great place to work?

The people, without a doubt. The culture here is all about collaboration, respect, and trust. Beyond that, the flexibility and freedom we’re given to manage our work make it a place where you can truly thrive.

Is there a quote or lesson that sums up your experience at GWS?

“Pass on what you have learned.” That’s been a guiding principle for me, and it’s something I strive to do every day—whether it’s mentoring new team members or sharing insights with colleagues.

Any final thoughts on your journey with GWS?

It’s been challenging, rewarding, and full of growth. From the field to the back office, every step has been a new chapter in an exciting career. GWS has given me the tools, trust, and opportunities to succeed, and I’m excited to see what comes next.
