Inside the World of Blade Repair Technician at Global Wind Service
For some, working hundreds of meters above the ground sounds terrifying.
For others, it’s freedom.
For Helder Santos, it’s also a passion. As a Blade Repair Technician at Global Wind Service (GWS) for the past four years, Helder combines precision, courage, and teamwork in one of the most demanding roles in the wind industry.
“For me, my work is a passion,” says Helder. “As they say, ‘Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.’ Every time we finish a blade repair and see the turbine spinning again, there’s a sense of pride, knowing we’ve brought it back to life”.
Before joining Global Wind Service, Helder worked in rope access, industrial cleaning, and painting. His journey into wind energy came naturally, blending his technical skills with a love for heights, precision, and teamwork.
“ I joined Global Wind Service because it was the company that best fit my lifestyle, professional, safety-oriented, and with great conditions for technicians. Here, I found people who care about doing things right and support each other. That makes a big difference."
What makes a great Blade Repair Technician?
"Technical skills are just one part of the job. To succeed as a Blade Repair Technician, you need the right mindset and a strong sense of responsibility.
You have to be focused and patient. Every repair requires accuracy and attention to detail, even a small mistake can affect turbine performance. But above all, you need the right attitude. If you enjoy what you do, everything becomes easier.”
You mentioned teamwork. What’s it like in practice?
"Teamwork is everything. Working at heights means relying on each other, trusting your colleagues completely, and communicating clearly.
When the team works well together, everything flows naturally. Tasks are faster, safer, and even the hardest days are easier when you’re surrounded by people with the right attitude.
And when there are new technicians joining, I enjoy teaching them. Helping someone take their first steps in blade repair reminds me of why I started."
What about safety awareness, discipline, and adaptability are other essential traits.
"Absolutely, each day brings new weather conditions, new challenges, and new lessons. You need to stay calm and flexible. The wind doesn’t always wait for you, so you have to be ready for anything,” Helder smiles.
So, what's the best part of being a Blade Repair Technician?
"Being a Blade Repair Technician means working close to nature, feeling the wind, the height, and the satisfaction of doing something meaningful. This job gives you freedom, adventure, and pride. It’s not just about repairing blades, it’s about contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable world,” says Helder.
